Definition of the recreation shadow price and its implications on recreation welfare estimation

Kateřina Kaprová

Abstract

The article presents the results of recreation demand analysis for the Šumava National Park, and focuses on a sensitivity analysis to the specification of the shadow price of recreation (travel cost). In the sensitivity analysis, I examine whether it matters to use calculated rather than theoretically correct perceived travel costs, and also discuss whether the travel costs stated by respondents are reliable.Based on the results, the perceived costs directly stated by respondents may be considered unbiased and may be validly employed in the analysis of recreation demand and other travel-based models. The relative absolute error of respondents stating the travel cost is stable for close and far trips, and does not alter with trip frequency or socio-economic characteristics of the respondents. To examine the effect of the specification on the recreation demand results, several recreation demand models are estimated, using truncated stratified negative binomial model. Regardless of the travel cost specification employed, the performance of the models is very similar. On the other hand, the effects on estimated consumer surplus are apparent for calculated travel cost specifications based on less precise estimation of travel distance and time. When relying on the results of existing simplified studies in decision-making, it is therefore necessary to reduce the bias caused by simplification of the study; in the Czech case, it is sufficient to consider an interval estimate of consumer surplus.

Rock Art Landscapes: its management and conservation

Barbora Půtová

Abstract

The subject of the paper is rock art seen from the perspective of preservation, management and conservation. The paper accentuates the influence of the natural environment on rock art creators, since the landscape could have been the inspiration and impulse for artistic creation. Rock art is thus viewed as a stable and immovable part of the landscape reflecting socially shared experience and cultural traditions of its creators. The paper lists basic stages of rock art research that lead to a management plan and conservation based on it. Attention is also paid to the meaning and current condition of researched sites including negative impacts of natural and human agents. The paper lists conservation and presentation of rock art as factors enabling the protection of sites for future generations and potential commercial use. The final part of the paper emphasises the protection of rock art from vandalism and its supervision.

Ivan Vološčuk, Martina Škodová, Peter Sabo, Juraj Švajda

Abstract

One of the most typical dispersed settlement representing the Wallachian colonization in the 16th century in the Žilina region around of Malá Fatra Mts presents Terchová village with Štefanová settlement in Vrátna valley. Another typical dispersed settlement is Zázrivá village in Orava region. From the viewpoint of recreational potential is very important, that old rural houses and country land started to be used in new form during last 50 years. To that progressive approach belong cottage form recreation, construction the new agrotourist centres with wide form of services as are special gastronomy, company events, cross country skiing, educational trails of nature protection and others. Ecologically significant agricultural landscape surrounding Trechová and Zázriva villages can be the areas with low intensity of agricultural land use, with traditional, often small-scale forms of management, varied landscape structure and its high biodiversity. The land around the village Terchová and the village Zázrivá has embossed challenging conditions that limited the process of land consolidation in totalitarian regimes. Important role in maintaining traditional farming has played a strong cultural and historical tradition and long-term hereditary committed to small-scale upland farming. To this must be added the pride of the local population on their traditions and resistance to the known negative consequences of the collectivization of agriculture. The immediate vicinity of the village Terchová negatively affected forests of National Nature Reserve Tiesňavy since the 17th century. On the northern side of the nature reserve the people of the village Terchová as forest users centuries alter tree species composition and thus reduce the ecological stability of forest ecosystems. Original mixed beech and fir forests with spruce are staggered beech forest coppice origin or artificial spruce monocultures.

Astro-tourism as new measure of nature tourism in the protected areas

Martin Labuda

Abstract

Beside long lists of endangered plant and animal species, there is also another entity, which became a critically endangered in last decades. Therefore, it deserves not only attention, but also protection. This entity is naturally dark night sky. This paper is based on fact, that light pollution has negative effects on wildlife and human health, and also wastes energy and limits the visibility of stars at night. Regarding this, organizations like the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) are designating natural landscapes for valuing the dark sky and taking outstanding efforts to protect the sky by applying exemplary lighting solutions. As a consequence, more and more International Dark Sky Places are coming up worldwide. Nowadays, it is of high interest to support and to implement environmental friendly forms of tourism into praxis due to the negative evolution of global climatic situation. Nature tourism is one of these forms. Its base features are the minimalization of its negative impacts on environment and the maintenance of ecological capacity. Dark Sky Parks are one of important measures to support nature tourism in the protected areas. In our paper, we introduce the concept of astro-tourism development on the model of Nature Park Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide in Germany. The main scopes of astro-tourism are to establish Dark Sky Park and the implementation of measures focused on dark sky protection, i.e. the elimination of light pollution over model area. The region of the Nature Park Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide is characterised by low settlement density and large, continuous forest areas, which lead to low light pollution.

Forestry education in the Arboretum s of Slovakia without barriers

Mariana Jakubisová

Abstract

The paper deals with the issue of conditions of environmental education in forestry arboretums in Slovakia through existing educational trails and their possibility of using for formal and informal education. These objects can create a specific space for education, physical activity and mental hygiene for different interest groups, including of disabled people in a wheelchair. The natural objects of arboretums are interesting from view of touristic-educational activities for all ages without difference. Formulation, quantification and creating of conditions for their accessibility are the key issues to achieving of these goals. Slovakia has in the European context attractive natural wealth of forest communities which is predetermined to environmental education with interconnect to movement activities in nature. We evaluated the significant Slovak forestry arboretums which were created the foresters and are managed forestry institutions. Arboretums and other natural the objects of similar orientation are predetermined for linking of educational, movement and relaxation activities on one side, but also the creation of conditions for communication without barriers on the other.

and Velké Meziříčí

Ivana Lampartová, Kateřina Blažková

Abstract

The aim of the article is to evaluate the revitalization measures from the point of view of recreational potential. The issues of revitalization of water elements, recreation potential and methods are described in the introduction. These methods can be used for evaluation. There are some examples of revitalization and forming of ponds, a wetland near the Bílý stream and the Balinka river in the region of Velké Meziříčí.Herádka retention basin in Třebíč region, is characterized in materials and methods. The results of this article focus on the evaluation of revitalization of Herádka model area. In the results, revitalization measures in terms of recreational potential in Třebíčsko model region is evaluated. The factors of external and internal environment are analysed using SWOT analysis and the results of questionnaire survey are assessed. Finally, possible measures to improve recreational possibilities in this area are suggested.

Characteristics and management of climbing sectors, case studies from Moravian Karst and Chřiby hills

Ivo Kohn, Aleš Bajer

Abstract

Rock faces provide one of the best environments where rare plants can grow and animals can live. The rock itself is also a memoir of natural history. This sensitive habitat is changing in respond to behaviour of rock climbers and its state is dependent on appropriate management. This can be done by examining of climbers preferences. Thanks to social networks we can track ascents of every route where each climber submitted his ascent and provide some analysis in trends for specific climbing area. For management of climbing sectors is important to know which routes are preferred to another. In both climbing sectors (Indie in Moravian Karst and Kozel in Chřiby hills) dangerous routes and routes with lower or higher grade have fewer ascents than safe routes and routes with middle grade etc.
